A lot of "information" has been making the rounds about chip tuning. Most of that "information" is misinformation.
After the installation of supposedly top-of-the-line, reasonably priced chips, many of our customers come to us with multitudes of problems ranging from significantly increased consumption to a rough running engine and even notable performance decreases in certain speed ranges.
We at Cartronic then tested our customers' old chips and at times picked out some of the most interesting engine map configurations. We strongly recommend against allowing anybody BUT trained professionals from installing tuning chips. Even supposed copies of original chips cannot guarantee flawless functioning!
The Cartronic team has years of experience in the optimization of Porsche performance chips. A long series of tests and continuing development with updated standards and equipment accompany bringing each of our chips to the market.
According to engine type, we modify engine map characteristics within a reasonable framework - for example fuel injection systems and ignition. This simply means that our alterations do not overstress the engine beyond the Porsche-recommended tolerance levels. We use only the optimization potential of serialized components.
Chip Tuning Today
A job only for the specialists?
It's human nature to call that "imaginative" or "unnatural" which does not register within the boundaries of the imagination and cannot be understood by the average person. Who doesn't wonder at David Copperfield and his spectacular tricks? Making the Statue of Liberty disappear in front of an audience of millions doesn't seem to be a problem for David, but the trick certainly involves lots of experience and technical support. Still, it's no magic...
In the age of electronically controlled motors another completely different kind of magician developed his trade: the "hp magician" or the "Chip Tuner" - his origins having been traced back to the birth of a humanitarian species whose three goals he has followed at all costs:
- Engine performance without end - with the least possible time expenditure and - maximum financial gain
through devious programming in the transmissions of performance hungry car owners.
In realty, we know that in most cases performance comes in the form of programmed-in engine damage resulting in financial consequences and significant time loss.
Every self-named "Chip Magician" is far from being a motor specialist with the necessary technical expertise and knowledge of the physical laws and system relationships that occur during a motor's combustion sequence. The truth is that few "Chip tuners" are familiar with the life and death consequences for a motor when they install their chips. The importance of the sixth decimal within their own programs completely eludes their technical know-how. Often times products mass-produced in foreign countries will be sold as technically "exact" programs.
The chips, better known as EPROMS, simply are not adjustable to the driving conditions on the German Autobahn, let alone suitable for most automobiles. Consumers must be especially wary of firms advertising the ultimate "Chip Tuning without Risk." It's truly rare to meet mechanics who command both traditional knowledge and the computer and programming know-how. As a rule, serious firms customize their control modules according to the actual parameters of the automobile.
Performance measurements taken at the beginning of the tuning process serve only as a technical reference. Only the trained eye of a professional can diagnose possible technical flaws and determine which optimization and customization of the engine map can correct those flaws. At the end of the chip tuning process, the customer has at his/her disposal a detailed description of the recorded performance measurements before and after the installation process.
Of course miracles cannot be expected. Customers can expect, on average, a performance increase of around approx. 3-8 hp. Though infrequent, some sophisticated performance kits can result in performance increases of up to approx. 50 hp - including various alterations in the computer module, carburetor, cooling unit, exhaust system, and valve drive. Only with the right know-how and development effort that typifies Cartronic's performance kits can such performance increases be realized in Porsche models. In comparison, we have noticed an increase of up to approx. 80 hp in Turbo models. Tuners with an acceptable motor stability and guarantee are above all rare.
An authorized technician at an approved location, for example TÜV, should in all cases, check out changes in performance or exhaust measurements. After the installation of a performance kit, any changes in the car's performance will be recorded in the KFZ papers (registration papers). Finding and contracting an exhaust-system expert to record performance changes creates a logistical and financial burden for chip installers.
The upshot of chip tuning: if you want it done right, you have to be ready to pay more. Or as an English poet once wrote: "I'm not rich enough to afford something cheap."
Following are a few remarks on questions often raised by our performance hungry customers.
"Why don't auto manufacturers offer chip tuning?"
In today's competitive and environment-conscience market, auto manufacturers are forced to curtail their options. Only cars that exhibit a high degree of profitability, comfort, design, and durability make it to the showroom. Gas guzzlers are a thing of the past and today's engineers simply do not dare design their engines to function at the limits of durability.
For those who see a hole in today's thinking there exists a new avenue of performance possibility: "professional chip tuning magician".
